Tours in Bhutan - FAQs:

1.How much does it cost to tour Bhutan ?

All international tourists wishing to travel to Bhutan have to pay US 100 per person per night as sustainable development fee (SDF) to the royal government of Bhutan.

On top of this cost, you will have to pay for your package tour cost  mentioned in the itinerary above.

The cost depends on the duration of stay in Bhutan and what category of hotels you choose to stay in.  The higher category of hotels like 4 star deluxe hotels and 5 star hotels will cost you extra premiums.

2.How many days is enough for tour of Bhutan ?

Most recommended is 7 nights / 8 days stay in Bhutan. During this tour you can visit Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Wangdue Phodrang (Gangtey & Phobjikha valley) and Haa valley.

However, the best part of Bhutan is Bumthang in central Bhutan (Often referred to as Switzerland of the Himalayas). If you wish to visit Bumthang and Trongsa, then you have to book minimum of 8 nights / 9 days trip.

3.Do I need Bhutan visa for visit to Bhutan and what are the documents required to process visa ?

Yes, you need Bhutan visa for visit to Bhutan. You have to book pre-paid tour package with one of the tour operators in Bhutan who will process Bhutan visa on your behalf. The documents / details you need to share with your tour operator to process visa are:

  • Photo page of your passport (Should have minimum of 6 months validity from the date of travel).
  • Passport size photo / half photo.
  • Residential address.
  • Occupation details.
  • Telephone number.

It normally takes a week to process the same. The e-Bhutan visa issued by the Department of Immigration, Thimphu Bhutan will be e-mailed to you. You can then travel to Bhutan.

Please note that no Bhutanese embassies / consulates are authorized to issue Bhutan visa.

4.Can I book Bhutan tour with an Indian or Nepali tour operator ?

It is not recommended to book your tour with Indian or Nepali tour operator as they are just commission agents.

5.What is cancellation policy for Bhutan tours booked ?

The Department of Tourism, Bhutan in addressing any dispute related to the cancellation and where any services provider who failed to share the cancellation policy to their client in advance, shall consider the cancellation policy as follows for reason other than force majeure events:

(1) No charge if cancelled within 45 days of the start of the tour programme;

(2) Charge 20% of the tour payment if cancelled within 30 days of the start of the tour programme;

(3) Charge 30% of the tour payment if cancelled within 21 days of the start of the tour programme;

(4) Charge 50% of the tour payment if cancelled within 14 days of the start of the tour programme; and

(5) Charge 100% of the tour payment charge if cancelled within 7 days or after the arrival tourist in Bhutan.

6. Can I pay for my trip in instalment ?

Yes, you can pay your trip in inslalments. You may send 50 % of the trip cost to confirm the tour and rest 50 % upon arrival in Bhutan.

7. Is it possible to pay for Bhutan tour by PayPal or credit card ?

No, you cannot pay for your Bhutan tour by Paypal. However, you can pay by credit card or you have to wire transfer (Swift) the payment. These are the only modes of payment accepted by our bank / government.

8.I would like to book a German speaking language guide for my Bhutan tour. How much is the charge?

We charge US $ 80 per day for German speaking language guide. You have to book the guide in advance as our tourism industry has a shortage of language speaking guides.

9.Can I request you to process my e-visa and book a car with you but not purchase a package Bhutan tour ?

Techinically, you can ask a Bhutanese tour operator to process your e-Bhutan visa and book a car with the agent. However, we (Yak Holidays) accept booking for full package Bhutan tour and not hire out the vehicles or provide guide services only.

10.How much are the entry fees for museums / monuments and festival visits during tours in Bhutan ?

The entry fees for museums / monument visits during tour in Bhutan are as follows:

  1. Ta dzong / National museum of Bhutan: US $ 4
  2. Rinpung dzong: US $ 6 
  3. Tiger’s nest monastery (Taktsang): US $ 12.5
  4. Kichu lhakhang: US $ 6
  5. National memorial chorten: US $ 6

11.Is it necessary to have a guide during Bhutan tour ?

Yes, it is mandatory to have a guide during the Bhutan tour from day one till you are seen off at the Paro airport.
